About Guided Pathways for STEM (GPS)



GPS is a program that provides evidence-based academic support activities as well as non-academic support activities to meet the basic needs and improve the well-being of STEM majors. Its innovative approach makes nearly every service available to participating students at the partner colleges, as well as CSUDH. GPS' student-centered, holistic design aims to increase the number of Hispanic and low-income students earning STEM undergraduate degrees. By meeting students' academic and nonacademic needs, GPS will improve graduation rates and develop students who are well informed, have strong self-determination, can advocate for themselves, have a strong sense of belonging, and are empowered to make choices for themselves.



About the GPS Lead Coordinator Position



The GPS Lead Coordinator will oversee the implementation of project activities, work closely with GPS academic coordinator, non-academic activities coordinator, career development and engagement specialist, and partner community college advisors. The Lead Coordinator will collaborate with STEM faculty, staff from other programs and departments on and off-campus to ensure proper implementation of all project activities. Important functions include assisting the project director with planning and facilitating the GPS Council of Advisors meetings, planning and facilitating the GPS operations team meetings, assisting the project director with the implementation of the project evaluation plan, maintaining communication with community college partners, and monitoring the progress of project activities. He or she will perform his or her duties in a fast-paced environment under limited supervision.



The Lead Coordinator reports to the GPS Project Director and will supervise the GPS coordinators and other GPS staff.



Position Information



This position is a full-time, salary-exempt, benefited position, plus employer-sponsored health, dental vision, life insurance, retirement program, and sick/vacation pay.



Annual Salary Range: $66,560.00 -$70,720.00 -Depending on Qualifications, plus benefits



Primary Position Responsibilities




  • Plan and facilitate GPS Operations Team meetings.

  • Lead recruitment efforts at CSUDH and at partner community colleges.

  • Lead the negotiation of articulation agreements with partner community colleges.

  • Lead the development of roadmaps for STEM majors.

  • Assist in planning and implementing the pre-semester Bridge to Knowledge program.

  • Organize and facilitate the development process of ADTs.

  • Assist with the implementation of the project's evaluation plan.

  • Assist with the preparation and submission of the project's annual performance reports.

  • Help with training proactive advisors and provide proactive advising and pre-enrollment advising.

  • Coordinate project activities in collaboration with staff from each of the partner community colleges.

  • Provide guidance and support to project coordinators.

  • Represent GPS in university meetings and serve on relevant committees and participate in regular departmental and partner meetings.

  • Initiate and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals and groups, including faculty, staff, student organizations, and off-campus community groups.

  • Participate in campus-wide events and programs, which seek to recruit, retain, or encourage the success of low-income and environmentally disadvantaged students.

  • Partake in appropriate professional development activities to remain current on relevant issues pertaining to higher education and the recruitment and retention of low-income and high-risk students.

  • Implement innovative ways of encouraging and supporting the personal developmental needs of a diverse student population.

  • Carry out other duties as assigned by the project director.



Successful candidates will have an experience that reflects the following:




  • Knowledge of GE, major, and graduation requirements.

  • Knowledge of university policy and procedures regarding all academic concerns.

  • Ability to interpret and use appropriate PeopleSoft admission, registration, advising, financial aid screens.

  • Knowledge of policies and procedures governing academic probation, disqualification, academic renewal, and reinstatement.

  • Knowledge of interviewing and counseling skills and the ability to apply these to the counseling session.

  • General knowledge of financial aid processes and policies.

  • Ability to interact and work cooperatively with a diverse student population and staff.

  • General knowledge of individual counseling techniques.

  • Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.

  • Ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions.

  • Proficient in Google Suite, Microsoft Office, Outlook, Zoom, and Teams.



Qualifications/Education




  • A master's degree in Counseling or in a STEM field or a directly related field.

  • Experienced in coordinating grant-funded projects.

  • Experienced in academic and non-academic advising; possesses skills to provide academic, career and personal advising in a university setting; possesses listening skills and ability to respond effectively to concerns and problems, including difficult or unpleasant situations.

  • Experienced working with first-generation, low-income students at a university setting.

  • Possesses outstanding leadership, organizational, planning, time management and problem-solving skills; able to manage multiple tasks and priorities.

  • Possesses skill to use technology tools such as word-processing, databases, and web-based programs that typically underpin and support program efforts and improve the efficiency of systems and processes.

  • Has excellent writing skills to compose and edit correspondence, reports, and published materials.

  • Knowledgeable of best practices as they relate to transfer programs, services, and delivery systems.

  • Possesses strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with a diverse population of faculty, students, staff, and the public.

  • Is flexible and adaptable to quick turnaround deadlines with short notice.

  • Is self-motivated to learn new concepts and participate in new projects.

  • Enjoys collaborating and working in a team environment.
