Position description

Faculty Position at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego - Geology and Geophysics

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego invites applications for a full-time 9-month tenure-track faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor. We seek outstanding candidates who integrate observations and methodologies from both geology and geophysics to address Earth science questions in marine and/or terrestrial environments. We have a particular interest in building on our current expertise in using observations and quantitative analysis to advance the fields of neotectonics, structural geology, paleoclimate, paleomagnetism, thermochronology, hydrogeology, geomorphology, and margin and basin evolution. We are also interested in research that contributes to a better understanding of the impacts of geological and geophysical processes-including those linked to weather and climate extremes-on understudied people, communities, and nations. While we will consider candidates working anywhere at the interface between geology and geophysics, preference will be given to candidates whose research complements the marine and sea-going strengths of Scripps. Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to teach in one or more of the following areas: geochronology, geomorphology, marine geology, sedimentology, and stratigraphy.

Scripps is dedicated to advancing belonging, equity, justice, and accessibility for all who are or wish to be members of our community. We welcome candidates who have had non-traditional career paths or who have taken time off for family reasons (e.g., caring for children, the disabled, or the elderly), or who have achieved excellence in careers outside academia (e.g., in professional or industry service). Information about Scripps' ongoing diversity efforts may be found here: https://scripps.ucsd.edu/diversity. Successful candidates must demonstrate a commitment to promoting belonging, accessibility, justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (BAJEDI) and a willingness to contribute to BAJEDI in Scripps' educational, research, and work environments.

The appointee is expected to develop and maintain a vigorous externally funded research program and to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the UC San Diego Earth Science program. Supervision of graduate students and service to the department, university, and broader discipline are expected.
